There was a bird outside of our window that was injured. Koby caught him a couple times. It stayed there long enough for Koby to draw him. Koby is such a good artist. I am so impressed with him.

We don't have a specific room in the house that we call our classroom. We have held school in our TV room, in our kitchen, in our living room, in our car, and outside. Somedays were harder than others with the children's additude and desire to do their school work, but over all it has been so much fun.

A day in the snow with friends

We had a snow day with our friends the Sluders. It was lots of fun slidding down their hill infront of their home. The weather was super cold that day. We all played outside until we couldn't stand it any longer. Ryan and Jon snow mobiled through the fields in back of the house. It was a fun day thanks Sluders!

The Polar Express

We had a really neat opportunity with Ryan's work to go serve some children at the North Pole. We boarded the children on the Polar Express after there tickets were punched. While we traveled to the North Pole the story of the Polar Express was being read to the children. The kids we were serving were really sick. For some this might be there last Christmas. They have cancer and other diseases that make them really sick. It was fun watching our children handing gifts out to the children after they sat on Santa's lap. It was such a wonderful experience for our family.

The kids had an opportunity to help Grandma and Grandpa Miller on their farm. They helped feed the cows almost everyday. These are called belty cows. They have long hair and eye lashes. These two cows were trouble makers. They made for some crazy days for grandma and pa. Always breaking out of there home and looking for adventures else where. They walked through a neighbors wedding party, made grandma search for them on a cold, snowy winters night when grandpa was sick in bed, they even broke out while grandma and pa were out of town. Good thing our neighbors are such amazing friends. They helped take care of them until they came home.

A family tradition on the Miller side is to shoot our pumpkins up on the mountain behind Grandma & Pa Miller's house on Thanksgiving Day. The kids had so much fun gathering the shells that fell from the guns. They each had a turn shooting a gun which Koby couldn't stop talking about. They really enjoyed this outing.

We have had so much fun playing in the leaves and experiencing the season of fall. We had a couple of perfect days. The children were raking up the leaves into a big pile and then running as fast as they could and jumping into the leaves. The wind blew the leaves out of the trees making the leaves fall around us as we played. Each season (Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall) is so fun and important for us and our world.

Thanksgiving is coming so quickly. I can't believe how fast the days are going. This turkey belongs to our neighbors. They raise turkeys from babies and then eat them during the holidays. They like to name them Thanksgiving, Christmas and after any other special occasion they are planning. It has been fun to watch these turkeys in action. They are crazy looking animals.

More Autumn Fun!!

The Salt Creek

I wanted to take the kids back behind my parents farm to explore the salt creek. We put on our boots and walked through the fields that were just recently inhabited by 4 horses. We saw and probably stepped in piles of evidence that they did infact live there. The bugs are slowly disappearing at the farm due to the cold weather. Koby was disappointed we didn't find any grasshoppers. After jumping over ditches, climbing under fenses we reached our destination, the salt creek. It is really an interesting stream of water. It is a natural spring and is connected to a hot springs that is located about 10 miles down the road. We found tad poles in the water (the children tried to catch them with no success), we saw spiders walking on the water, seaweed, and lots of smelly stinky mud (good thing we had on our old boots). The kids really wanted to play in the water. In the sumers when I was a child we use to play in the salt creek to cool off. After I told the kid this they were ready to jump in. We touched the water to see if it was warm enough for a swim. It was warmer than the temperature outside but still cold enough not to swim in it. The kids found sticks and decided to messure how deep it was. Then they would pull out the stick to see where that would messure on them. If Camryn went into the water it would have gone up to her shoulders. That would have made for a good swim. We found a big bowl full of ice that once gave drinking water to the animals. The kids had so much fun picking up pieces of it and throughing it in the water. I use to feel like we need to drive long distances to find fun and interesting things for our kids to learn about. It has been so nice for me to realize that we have so many interesting things in our own back yards. We just need to open our eyes and look for them.

What a better way to spend the day than playing pretend with your sister. They always talk about how they want to be ballerinas when they grow up. Their cousin Brooklynn gave these skirts to them and they wore them everywhere. What beautiful ballerinas!!!

My cute Camryn loves to read books. Some of her favorite books are... Pinkalicious, Dick and Jane, Tinkerbelle, Going on a Bear Hunt, Imogenes's Antlers, Elmer, The Selfish Crocodile, Are you my mother? Pretty much this girl likes to be read to. If it is about a princess or anything girly then that is an added bonus.

We VOTED. Time will only tell if the best man will win.

We wanted our children to experience what election day is like. So on November 4th we opened up our own electoral booth (a.k.a. The shower). We had already studied about the different candidates. We studied about our country and how we became the United State of America. The children loved lining up to go into our booth. Grandma even gave them a treat after (it was said on the news that various electoral locations were offering ice cream and other goodies to those that voted). We had lots of fun with this. The ballots were tallied thanks to dad and the results were in. John McCain won the popular vote and electoral vote. It was a close one though. John McCain winning 3 out of the 5 votes. What a fun day. I love these kids so much. It is so much fun being there teacher.

We had so much fun on Halloween Day. Our special costumes that Grandma Spelts gave us were packed away in Vegas. Aunt Marlyse saved the day and brought their costumes over for us to use. We met at Grandma Millers house ate homemade chillie in bread bows underneather scary spiderwebs that were hung above the dinner table. After we loaded the cars and knocked on 11 doors. Seeing that our bags were full we came back home and watched scary disney movies and ate homemade pumpkin pie. What a wonderful halloween.

Jack-O-Lanterns

This was such a fun fall day. We decided we needed to carve some pumpkins. We went to the closet farmers market and picked the perfect pumpkins. The kids loved pulling out the slimmy seeds with there fingers. After we were done we lined the back yard with our jack-o-lanterns and Koby lite them up. The back yard looked so festive. The kids had so much fun!!

This is a book I used a lot when talking to the kids about different events in our history. I wanted them to understand how we became the country that we are. There are so many cool stories that my children really enjoyed. These were our favorites

pg. 38 Who fired the first shot of the American Revolution?

This talks about Paul Revere and the two other spies (William Dawes and Dr. Samuel Prescott) that helped him get the message to our leaders. A very interesting story and fun for a 7 year old.

pg. 123 She's big, she's green, she's American's Welcome Queen. Who is she?

(Statue of Liberty). This one was fun. There are stories of immigrants coming into the country and how welcoming it was to see this statue.

We talked about when women and black were allowed to vote.

We talked about where our state capitol is located and where George Washington lived while the White House was being built.

We talked about the roll that children played in the war. They were used as guides in there back yards. They would help the good guys through the back woods and lead the red coats the wrong way until they were lost. When they were 14 years old they were allowed to play the drum or flute (helping the troops to keep thyme) or carry a flag for the troops. They were spies and helped so much with war efforts.

This was a really good book.

Caught their first garden snake!!

Camryn and Koby were so nervous when they saw bugs, dogs, or snakes when we moved from Las Vegas. I was so proud of them on this day. They found this garden snake and caught it. They held this snake for the longest time and then found a good home for it. We talked about how good snakes are on a farm. They eat bugs and some even eat mice.

Field trip to the Zoo and Park

This day was such a beautiful fall day. We needed to get away from our everyday routine and decided that this fun park and zoo would be a great place for the kids. This wasn't our first time there but still so much fun. We saw monkeys, all kinds of birds, racoons, turtles, ducks, and our favorite, 2 bald eagles. Grandma and Grandpa Miller, cousins Bren and Alex came with. What a fun outing.

October Project

Our project theme this month is... PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS. We have the opportunity to elect a new president ever 4 years and it is taking place November of this year. What a more fitting subject for my children.

Today for our first discussion we talked about Columbus and how he helped discover this wonderful country. How the people who lived here wanted to be free and to not have to answer to a king or queen. How men, women, children, old and the young fought for our freedom to choose for ourself. After the war was over the people elected George Washington to be our first President of the United States. As time went on there became a devision among our people, which George Washington discouraged, those separate parties became know as the Republican and Democratic parties. Then we talked about who was running for president in the 2008 election. I told them that at the end of our learning all that we could about these candidates that they will be asked to vote. After we find out who the winner is we will open up there ballots to see who they chose to be the next President of the United States.

Meeting a Children's Book Author

We went to a park and listened to Mark Ludy talk about his children books. He wrote "The Farmer," The Flower Man," The Grump," Jujo: The Youngest Tribesman," When I was a Boy... I Dreamed" and "When I was a girl...I dreamed." Mark Ludy really seems to love being a writer. It was fun to listen to him. He didn't talk too long which was great for my children's attention span. I was glad for that. He read one of his books to us which my kids really enjoyed. He talked about how he became interested in reading books and how he became a good artist. Koby really enjoyed this. The girls kept on asking when we were going to go. But all in all it was a good experience. Thanks Grandma Spelts for telling us about it. We had lots of fun.

Field trip to our local airport

I wanted to have one more day talking about air planes before our first project day. We packed a lunch and ended up at our local airport. It was so much fun. The children were so excited seeing the planes flying over our heads as we were nearing the airport. We stood there on the edge of the launch pad watching the planes coming and going. I asked them all kinds of questions like... Can you eat on an airplane? What happened when you have to go to the bathroom? We talked about what happens when the airplane is about to take off. We discussed what the flight attendants job is... serving drinks and food to the passengers. How they review safety issues before the airplane takes off. We tuned into the airports radio station to hear the pilots talking with the air traffic controllers. That was really interesting. They almost spoke a different language. It was fun to hear them say you are ready for take off and then to watch the airplane start down the run way, picking up speed, and lifting off of the ground. We were there for over an hour talking about experiences I have had on airplanes and review all that we have discussed this past month. It was so much fun.

Our Book of Mormon Studies

Our family is reading The Book of Mormon as a part of our home schooling this year. We read one chapter a day before we start school. This has helped us so much in our studies and in the spirit that is in our home. It is fun to listen to the history of the Nephites and the Lamonites. To hear there struggles and there joys and to compare their lives to ours. I have the children read with me each day. One of Koby's teacher's last year said that she could tell which mormon families were reading The Book of Mormon with there children everyday. The children that participated in daily scripture study had a higher comprehension level and were the best readers in class. To tell you the truth that wasn't my family last year. We did our best but our scripture studies were definitely hit an miss. I am excited to teach my children more about the gospel and to see there reading comprehension improve.

We went to the library and picked up as many books that we could find on airplanes. The kids loved learning about the Wright Brothers and Amelia Earhart. I wonder if they ever imagined airplanes being as big as they are today.

Victory Dance for Camryn!!!

We are so proud of our Camryn. She finished 11 chapters from the Dick and Jane series. There are 3 books with 11 short chapters in each of them. We mark off each chapter and after she finishes reading each book she gets to go into the dollar store and pick out a toy. When she is finishes all 3 books she can pick out a $15 item. We are so proud of you Cam. GOOD JOB!!

A fun way to teach reading

First of all, I give all credit for this idea to my Sister n' law (Marlyse) and her Dad.

You take beginner chapter books (We like Dick and Jane books) and take each word that is in each chapter and write them down on it's own flash card (Sight words, I call them). After the words are memorized we open up the book and let the child read the words that they memorized on the flash card in the book. This helps them to gain confidence in there ability to read. It made Camryn so excited when she finished her first chapter and now first book. There philosophy is that reading a mostly memorization. By the time Koby started Kindergarten he finished 3 books with 11 chapters in them all by himself.

5 Senses

This week we are talking about our 5 Senses. I am so excited. I think my kids will have lots of fun with this. Today we talked about "hearing". I blindfolded them and had them guess different sounds I was making with various things such as... nail clippers, a fly swatter, the zipper on my wallet, and a couple quarters jingling in my pocket. We went outside and listened to the world in our front yard. We heard lots of airplanes and helicopters, birds in our trees, cars in our neighborhood, and the rustling of the palm tree leaves in the wind. We went back in side and talked more about vibration and how others that can't hear communicate with others. I received lots of fun information from a book called "Learning Games Exploring the Senses through play"- By Jackie Silberg. It is such a fun book. It will be my guide throughout this week teaching about the different senses we are so blessed with.

Zion's National Park (Nature Walk)

We took a trip to southern Utah to visit some family this week. It was lots of fun. Our travels took us to Zion's National Park for a night stay and a day hike. It was lots of fun exploring the wild life, different plants, rocks and mountains there in Zion's. We even found some leaves that were changing colors. When Ryan was on his mission in the Philippines they use to catch beetles just like the one we caught in the picture shown below. They use to tie a string around the beetle and it would fly around them. We tried it. Those beetles have such pretty colors on them and they are great little flyers. What a fun day with our family.

Prediction Jar

This is our prediction jar. This week I filled it up with mints and the kids wrote down how many mints they thought were in the jar. The one closest to the actual amount in the jar won. In the middle of our lessons we took a break and I told them who was the winner. . . Koby guessed the exact number (20). The kids really liked this game. I hope to do this each week. Koby is in charge of it this week. I wonder what he will put in his jar. Last year Koby's teacher played this game with the kids each week. Koby looked forward to it and won a couple of times. Once a child brought in a carved out pumpkin with a pile of seeds in the bottom. They can get creative or keep it simple. Either way it is lots of fun.

Nature Journaling

Today was so much fun. We went on a walk through the Wetland Park near our house. The kids each were given a little journal that is designated as their "Nature Journal". In this journal they are supposed to draw pictures, press pretty flowers, tell about something interesting they found or saw as we are out in nature, etc. We have walked this park many times as a family previous to today and when the children heard that we were going there they were kind of disappointed. As we got out of the car they looked at the park a little differently. They saw things that they missed on previous walks. It was fun to watch them explore and really look at the world around them.

September's Project Theme

Septembers project theme was introduced to the kids today. It is airplanes. We are going to learn all that we can about airplanes. At the end of September the kids will do a project showing what they learned (with our help of course). Today we talked about the Wright brothers and how at the ages 7 and 11 their dad came home with a model helicopter for them to play with. It was a dream of a man in France (Alphonse Penaud). This sparked Orville and Wilbur interest in flying. The kids really enjoyed hearing their story. Afterward Koby taught us how to make paper airplanes and we flew them to see who's would go the farthest. Camryn's won!!! Koby's airplane was a trick airplane. It was lots of fun. School was great today.

The first day of school jitters

Last night I was so nervous for school to start. My husband (Ryan) wanted to watch a movie with me after the children went to bed and I had to review what I had planned for this week. He kept on telling me that it was going to be fun and that I just needed to relax. Well, he was right. The kids were so excited for school to begin they got up extra early. We were done with school by 11:30. Koby is so smart when it comes to addition. We went through the flash cards with no problems. I think I will continue to work on addition for another week and then make the problems bigger. Change it up a bit. We work on spelling words and took a pretest. Kob did pretty good on his test. He will have it all figured out by the end of the week. Camryn knew lots of her alphabet but there are still some that she would know the sound and not the letters name, so I am going to review two letters a week. I just want to make sure that she knows them really well. We did a little work out (exercise) in the house. We each took turns being the leader. We ran around throughout the house a few times, we did some jumping jacks, Koby had us squat against the wall for one minute (that burned the legs), we did cartwheels outside on the grass. It was lots of fun. We read lots of books and enjoyed our time together.

OK, so here is our schedule for the first week of school ... I received a list of basic curriculum for my kindergartner and 2nd grader at Basic Skills curriculum. I am going to use this a base for what I teach this year. I will post our lesson plans, but I reserve the right to change it up at anytime. If my daughter is struggling in one area then we might work on it a little longer. If they are having so much fun in an area we might focus on it a little longer. I am so excited to get started. I love being my children's mom and am excited to get to spend more quality time with them this year. Our first week is really going to be review things they remember from last year and to gage where we need to start our studies this year. It will be fun to see how much our lesson plans will change as the year progresses and as we become adjusted to home schooling.

In Kindergarten Koby's teacher designated every Monday as "Monday fun day". So by special request that great idea will continue in our school. This day we are going to play hide n' go seek in the house.

First day of school

We are going to start our school at the same time that the public schools start here in our city. So, August 25th will be our first day of school. I can't believe how fast the summer has come and gone. Do you set certain goal to achieve during the summer break? I do, my list was long too but not very much was accomplished. Oh well, it has been a fun and very relaxing summer for my family.

So I am in the list making phase in preparing for this years school. So far these are some of the ideas that I have for this years schooling. The areas that we are going to focus on.

For my kindergartner:

Review her ABC's, numbers (letter recognition, sorting and some adding), Review colors, She knows how to write her name but I just want to work on her full name this year (first and last name), reading (she is already reading in the Dick and Jane books so I would like to continue reading in those and then move on to different books), weekly art projects, learning different songs, exercise and play time.

We will spend 1 1/2 to 2 hours in school mode with her each day.

My Second Grader:

Addition, Subtraction and fractions, spelling, reading, writing, science, social studies, Health and exercise and games.

Together projects:

In the morning before school we will continue our daily scripture study. Our goal is to read the whole Book of Mormon by the end of the school year. I wouldn't be surprised if we did it sooner.

Each month we will focus on a theme like September might be Oceans. So for example the month of September we will learn all that we can about the ocean. Why is it salty?, different animals that live in it, what causes the waves?, how deep is it?, etc. Then around the end of the month we will visit the ocean and explore all the things that we talked about. It will be fun to watch them discover the things that we studied. At the end of each month we will have the kids present to us what they learned about this subject. I might even narrow the project subject to one thing like have my son focus on sharks and my daughter dolphins. I will post our monthly subject soon. Koby did this last year and it was great for him to get in front of his peers and present something. He grew so much from his first presentation to the last. It was fun to see.

Library every other week.

At least one field trip a month if not more.

They get to choose one extra curricular activity per season. This will give them some social interaction as well as church every Sunday.

Why home school?

The past couple of months I have been thinking about schools for my children. We are making yet another move and at the present time we don't know where this move will take us. Koby will be in 2nd grade and Camryn will be in Kindergarten. I had them registered at Explore Knowledge Academy www.ekacademy.com (A charter school) and love everything about this school (Koby attended school there last year). The thing is that I don't think that our next move will leave us close enough to justify my driving there three times a day. One day a thought came to my mind that I should teach home school this year. I started to think about it and to talk with a friend (Thanks Jennie) about there experiences and curriculum that they used and it just fell into place. I am so excited for what this year will hold for our family. This is our school blog and at the end of the year it will become our yearbook. Our weekly lessons will be posted for those that are doing home school maybe this could be a way for you to get some ideas from me, and in return any HS (home School) friends can post their plans in the comments section, providing me (and everyone else) with some original ideas every week.
