Story Time

My cute Camryn loves to read books. Some of her favorite books are... Pinkalicious, Dick and Jane, Tinkerbelle, Going on a Bear Hunt, Imogenes's Antlers, Elmer, The Selfish Crocodile, Are you my mother? Pretty much this girl likes to be read to. If it is about a princess or anything girly then that is an added bonus.

First book on Koby's reading chart

Koby just finished reading this book. He is doing such a wonderful job with his reading. I am so proud of him. This is a book that my mom use to read to me when I was a child. It was fun to hear the story again. Good Job Koby Boy!

Our Book of Mormon Studies

Our family is reading The Book of Mormon as a part of our home schooling this year. We read one chapter a day before we start school. This has helped us so much in our studies and in the spirit that is in our home. It is fun to listen to the history of the Nephites and the Lamonites. To hear there struggles and there joys and to compare their lives to ours. I have the children read with me each day. One of Koby's teacher's last year said that she could tell which mormon families were reading The Book of Mormon with there children. The children that participated in daily scripture study had a higher comprehension level and were the best readers in class. To tell you the truth that wasn't my family last year. We did our best but our scripture studies were definitely hit an miss. I am excited to teach my children more about the gospel and to see there reading comprehension improve.

These are the books we are using this year in teaching Koby and Camryn how to read. The techniques taught in the Writing Road to Reading are great. I highly recommend these methods.

Victory Dance for Camryn!!!

We are so proud of our Camryn. She finished 11 chapters from the Dick and Jane series. There are 3 books with 11 short chapters in each of them. We mark off each chapter and after she finishes reading each book she gets to go into the dollar store and pick out a toy. When she is finished with all 3 books she can pick out a $15 item. We are so proud of you Cam. GOOD JOB!!

A fun way to teach reading

First of all, I give all credit for this idea to my Sister n' law (Marlyse) and her Dad.

You take beginner chapter books (We like Dick and Jane books) and take each word that is in each chapter and write them down on it's own flash card (Sight words, I call them). After the words are memorized we open up the book and let the child read the words that they memorized on the flash card in the book. This helps them to gain confidence in there ability to read. It made Camryn so excited when she finished her first chapter and now first book. There philosophy is that reading is mostly memorization. By the time Koby started Kindergarten he finished 3 books with 11 chapters in them all by himself.
